..Your political choice kid...

..Your political choice kid...

As we grow as people, it cannot be denied that the values and prejudices of those who surround us, play a vital role in the process. Both in the home and the school environment, as a young person, one is constantly being told what to do, what to wear, and what to think. In the natural and seemingly growing confusion of our adolescent years, we are drawn to rebel against our parents, to make our own decisions about what we will wear and what we will do. This rebellious sentiment can be considered our first personal revolution.

In our high school years, we are so preoccupied with the latest fashions, popularity contests, and forming and maintaining social bonds, not to mention keeping up with our school work. As a result, there is little time for philosophical, existential or political contemplation.

In the early stages, we tend to 'fly on autopilot. We do not decide our faith, our values, and our social perceptions but rather our beliefs are given to us. The gigantic wave of influential power that our parents and teachers have on us can help create an environment in which we become the spectators of our own lives. At the same time, the mass media can slowly take away our right to form a personal opinion, and whenever possible, to make our own conclusions or two.

Can we live this way forever? Of course. No harm done, but it may result in a life that is profoundly less fulfilling and beside the fact, one day the time will come where political issues will not be just someone else's problem, but will affect us. We will need to fight for the rights of our children and our children's children.

In the very same way that one day we made our own decisions about what we would wear, someday, hopefully sooner rather than later, we must become involved in the political process, by forming and voicing our own opinions. This is to say that we cannot wait until a law mandates our children be deployed to fight a foreign war at the early age of eighteen, or that they be stripped of their rights due to their beliefs or sexual orientation. In the majority of cases, one's political ideas will not be in complete alignment with that of any particular political party. You may be pro-choice and not be pro taxes, and of course you may be pro-war and no be content with cutting social program spending. The bottom line is to become educated and aware of the fact that legislation is not far away from your personal freedoms. It is not solely something will affect others, it will define what type of country you live in. Use your right to vote, do not waste the sacrifice of those who have given their lives so that you can always have the right to vote for or against.

As the French say......do politics, or politics will do you.
